  1. I really like the picture of Vern right after he picked up the penny and seeing how small the tree was 30 years ago.

    1. also look how the cement curb has even been pushed up from years of hydraulics at work by the tree growing. Also if you notice the notch in the tree which held the treehouse, the notch in the tree is higher up from the ground level.

    3. It's so crazy that people all over the world have seen this movie. I live near Cottage Grove, Eugene, Veneta, Brownsville have all been hangout places for me and my friends growing up. We love hiking on Row River Trail. It's so beautiful out there. Not much happens in Oregon so it's neat to see our world on TV lol

  4. No problem. That's awesome! I hope you're able to visit them.

  5. I made the trip from australia to see all these places.. amazing journey. The house under which Vern over hears the the older boys talking about the boosted car is just around the corner from Quidaliscious..the mailbox baseball road scene is close by too on Veneta rd, Franklin. The part of the track where Gordie and Chris talk about him being a writer is further up the row river trail, not far from where Teddy dodges the train. The road where the 2 cars play chicken in almost the same as it was back then. Glen Bateman Perth Australia ( glen bateman on facebook)

    1. Love your dedication. I'm a big SBM fan too! Kudos! I love the old Get Carter film too. There used to be a 'Get Carter Tour' where someone used to show people around all the iconic places from the film - was this the case with your pilgrimage to USA or was the searching all your own work? 11. Thanks... this is awesome!! I am just trying to work out whether it is conceivable to visit some of these places on my trip in May! I am flying to Seattle from the UK and staying for a day, then driving over to Forks, down to Astoria (GOONIES!!!) and now I realise that my other favourite movie of all time is not too far away, I am considering doing this. The train track looks totally unsafe to stand on (actually quite terrifying) but are you able to - or is it blocked off? The end where Gordy and Vern jump definitely looks blocked off. I only have 4 days before I have catch a flight from Seattle to San Fran - I fear I am setting my sights to high to fit it all in! :(

    1. Why would you want to visit Forks, WA? Twilight was set there but not filmed there. Filming was based out of Portland which is where the Cullen house is located. Most all of what you see of Forks is really St. Helens, OR and shots of the Columbia Gorge. You can see Multnomah Falls east of Portland in the baseball scene. The later movies worked out of Vancouver BC though still have a few St Helens locations for continuity. St. Helens would be on the way to Astoria if you left from Portland

    2. I didn't bother with Forks in the end! I re-visited too... and still didn't bother! Stand By Me was much more important! ;)

  12. Hi Nicole! So cool that you're making the trip to the Pacific Northwest. If you have the time, I would definitely recommended adding the Stand By Me locations to your visit. Just keep in mind that the railroad trestle is about 315 miles South of all the other locations in the film. You're right about the track being unsafe, in fact it's extremely unsafe and I don't suggest walking across it. In some areas it even looks like you could possibly step right through it if you hit the wrong spot. That being said, there are barriers at each end of the trestle but if someone really wanted to walk onto it all they'd need to do is carefully step around the barriers. I also visited The Goonies locations at the same time I visited the Stand By Me locations but my camera lens got wet and all the pictures were blurry, so unfortunately I wasn't able to add them to my blog. I actually took my Stand By Me pics with a disposable camera of all things. Let me know if you have anymore questions and best of luck.

    4. FYI… I have visited the Stand by Me locations in Brownsville, Cottage Grove and Junction City - plus a couple of summers back I managed to (despite the wildfires everywhere) finally get to McBurney to see the bridge! Funnily enough, I’m flying out to the states on Thursday to visit my friend who lives in Veneta, OR… so looks like my final location to see is the old junk yard. Funnily enough, I took my other friend who lives in Eugene with me when I revisited - she didn’t even realise that she lived so close to it all! Thank you again for sharing all of your findings - they have helped me to visit these locations that are so very special to me through my love of this movie! All the best, Nicole, Essex, England 😊

Thanks for your suggestions Paul. I guess the railroad is off the itinerary for this trip because Eugene is really the furthest south I can go before I have to go back to Seattle and catch a flight to San Fran for the second leg of the trip and once I'm there I won't go as far north as Burney. I think your pics are great... :)

  14. its all worth seeing. its an amazing experience. The Cemetary is just out of town where they filmed the dream sequence. I saw the river where they found the body, but not the exact spot as its on private property. I also saw the red bridge where they discuss how far it will be. If you have a chance view the pie eat comp Kent Lutrell who played the body can also been seen in that as the boy standing between the donelly twins. Glen Bateman Perth.

  15. The town itself is very much unchanged and the locals are happy to chat about it. Stay at the Brownsville Bed and Breakfast the people who run it are lovely and even more....He was the mayor at the time of filming and they remember it!!

  24. So I'm watching this movie and I say to my wife, "man that sure looks like where I grew up". I look it up on imdb and I couldn't believe it, there it was... Brownsville and Junction City OR. I grew up in Harrisburg, just across the river from JC and have been by these locations hundreds of times. I had moved away a few years before filming. Your pics bring back great memories, thanks!

  27. An outstanding novella by Stephen King & a near perfect production by a near first time director. This film confirms that casting truly is 90% of directing: See www.youtube.com/watch?v=izwI3TO3RbM

Part of the reason that this film succeeded so well is subliminal. Few realize it but the story parallels "The Wizard Of Oz" on more than a few levels. With that being said, both King & Reiner somehow managed to miss a HUGE STORY POINT from a 12 year old's perspective. They failed to include a railway tunnel (a kid's worst nightmare) within the story. Let this be a reminder to aspiring writers and directors: Nobody Is Perfect.

  29. Where was Mr Dreyfuss parked at the beginning of the movie?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Possibly Buford County Park near Eugene. Recently went on tour of Nature Conservency Willamette Confluence by the Friends of Buford Park and Mt. Pisgah the leader pointed to a field at the NW side of Mt. Pisgah and said "this is known as
stand by me meadow." The leader was very knowledgeable and a well known person, but could no give any details. But, since I was in Brownsville during the filming in summer 1985, I am aware of some film locations and never heard about Buford Park. I just finished watching movie and the opening scene with Richard Dryfuss is a possibility.

  31. Some of the background scenery was breathtaking. The opening shot with R. Dreyfuss parked by the side of the road. When the boys are leaving the tracks to cut through the woods. Often think when people describe movies as important it's overstated but this one for me is. Totally takes me back to my childhood every time I watch (which was today) and the ending is perfect. 'I never had friends later in life like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?'. Thank you for these pics. It's amazing that in a lot of them they are so similar even after all this time

  47. Hi ... I’m glad everyone enjoyed the movie and a look at the outdoor filming locations. I must have watched that movie 6 times in 1986 and took my closest friends to see it. The movie reminded me of my gang of childhood friends, out tree fort, the discoveries, and adventures we did together. 2004, I searched and visited these filming locations. Here’s a true story from the summer of 1985; I was flying Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) each and every weekend, back and forth, from my home in San Francisco to a project house in Long Beach. I’d catch the last flight every Friday from a plane arriving with passengers from Medford and Eugene, OR. One Friday while in the air I happened to notice a small skinny kid walking barefoot down the isle. How strange I thought, a child walking barefoot down the isle of the plane. After the movie came out and I saw it in it’s first week, I was slightly puzzled, as something about the movie was nagging the back of my mind, besides bringing forth all sorts of childhood memories. I later realized that barefoot child on the plane was child actor Will Wheaton returning from Southern Oregon.

  52. Where is the leech swamp scenes filmed and the night morning after camp scenes filmed

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh, the bridge!

This film, alongside with "It" (the real, proper adaptation with Tim Curry, of course), left a considerable imprint on my childhood memories when I watched both as a youngling in Poland... We were just a year or so after the fall of communism, and my little self was living in a place which happened to have multiple locations very similar to those in both films... from a dreamy, slow-rolling river location, which was just like "The Barrens" in "It", to, yes, the bridge!

We had a similar spooky, giant bridge outside the city, spanning the Vistula River, and it was (still is, actually) in a similar remote, lush and green, peaceful location in the middle of nature, complete with nearby pastures, birds, herds of horses, etc.

It's actually three times longer than the bridge in "Stand By Me", I think it may be even taller, and it was made in XX century only of steel and concrete - no wood - but as a child, I always thought of it as the "brother bridge" of the bridge in "Stand By Me", anyway. I've visited it often in childhood and later, and while I'll never cross or visit the original bridge from "Stand By Me" in USA, I've always wanted to cross this bridge here, like the boys did in the picture. Just step on it and slowly walk across, hold on to its steel sides, as the wind howls around, with the river glistening far, far below!

I still have not done that. :-D

  54. The film to me represents a time that I loved so much. I love everything about the green nature/ under populated towns, basically the time when i first saw it in the 80s and where it sets 60s. Im so glad a i lived in the 70/80\90s before the world got crazy
