Hell or High Water




Hell or High Water was released into theaters on August 26th, 2016. Filming locations include Clovis, Estancia, Los Lunas, Moriarty, Portales and Rio Puerco, NM. Despite being set in Texas, it was filmed entirely in New Mexico. It was directed by David Mackenzie. It was written by Taylor Sheridan, who also wrote Sicario, Wind River and created the television series Yellowstone. Sheridan also makes a cameo as a cowboy in the film. It bodes a solid cast, which includes Jeff Bridges, Ben Foster and Chris Pine. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. The score was done by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. The films first DVD release was on November 22nd, 2016.

Howard ranch - Country Road A123 Moriarty, NM. 87035

The house has been there since at least the early 1980's. Reaching this location requires a two and a half mile drive along an unpaved road.

Bill's Jumbo Burger/Bank #3 - 2113 N. Main St. Clovis, NM. 88101

At the time of my visit, the restaurant was still Bill's Jumbo Burger. The banked looked to be vacant.

Casino - 14500 Central Ave. SW Rio Puerco, NM. 87121
(Route 66 Casino Hotel)

The 154 room casino hotel opened on September 1st, 2003.

Sunset Motel - 501 Route 66 Moriarty, NM. 87035

The motel opened in 1959 and operated as a two room motel without a sign for the first year. Scenes from the 2010 film, A Dry Land, were also filmed here.

T-Bone Cafe - 315 5th St. Estancia, NM. 87016

Formerly the Blue Ribbon Bar & Grill, the structure was built in 1903. It closed in 2017. The building across the street, used as a bank in the film, has since been demolished.

This location is part of the Caprock Escarpment, where the road drops down from the high plain into the surrounding rolling terrain.

    I really enjoy your blog and visit it often. Thanks for putting all of this together.
    If you are ever going through NM again, the brothers' ranch house is at the following:

    I still have all of the call sheets from this movie, so I can dig up other locations if you are interested.
